wireless earbuds for your phone
Which wireless earbuds fit your phone?
You don't pick earbuds from a model number. You pick them from the phone they have to live with. These three are already in the shop. Apple's page for the AirPods 4 is written around an iPhone. Samsung's pages for the Galaxy Buds 4 Pro and the Galaxy Buds 3 Pro are written around a Galaxy phone.
The Bluetooth SIG describes Bluetooth Classic as the radio protocol behind wireless headphones. A version number on a spec page, 5.3 or 6.1, is the maker's claim about that radio. It isn't a score.
Which phone are these written for?
Start with the phone you already carry. If the page assumes a different one, the features they spend time on may not show up.
Apple's AirPods 4 spec page lists an iPhone on the latest iOS as a system requirement. The same page says AirPods can be used as wireless Bluetooth headphones with non-Apple devices, and that functionality may be limited. The catalog title says effortless setup for iPhone. That matches the page. It doesn't promise the same setup on an Android phone.
Samsung's Galaxy Buds 4 Pro page tells you to open the case next to a Galaxy phone and tap Connect. A footnote on Samsung's spec page says a Bluetooth audio connection works regardless of the operating system. The same notes say the Galaxy Wearable app needs a phone on Android 12 or above, and that the app isn't supported on iOS. You can hear music on an iPhone. You shouldn't expect Samsung's settings screen there.
The Galaxy Buds 3 Pro is the earlier pair. Samsung's US support page describes a seamless connection to your other Galaxy devices, and a canal-style earbud. It's the same phone question, one generation back. A 4 in the name isn't a score against a 3.
What does the name already say?
The product name tells you this much. The rest is on the maker's page and the listing.
| Listed as | What you can tell | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Apple AirPods 4 | Apple. Wireless earbuds. The title names spatial audio, an H2 chip, a USB-C case, up to 30 hours, and setup for iPhone. | Whether the listing matches the AirPods 4 page, or the separate page that adds noise cancellation. |
| Samsung Galaxy Buds 4 Pro | Samsung. Wireless earbuds. The title says Pro, and 2026. | The phone, the noise-cancelling line, and the IP rating. |
| Samsung Galaxy Buds 3 Pro | Samsung, earlier Pro. The title says AI wireless earbuds. | The phone, and whether a tip set is in the box. |
Does the page say noise cancelling?
Noise cancelling and a seal are different jobs. A tip can take the edge off a room even when the battery is dead. The electronic part is a separate claim. The noise-cancelling headphones guide is the over-ear version of this question. These three are in-ear.
On Apple's AirPods 4 spec page, the audio list includes a driver, voice isolation, personalized spatial audio, adaptive EQ, and a vent. It does not list Active Noise Cancellation. Apple publishes a second page, AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation. If the listing doesn't say noise cancellation, don't treat it as that second model. The 30 hours with the case, and the 5 hours on one charge, are the figures on the page without that feature. Apple says those hours depend on settings and the room.
Samsung's US page for the Galaxy Buds 4 Pro names Active Noise Cancellation, and a mode that lets the room back in. The spec page lists up to 6 hours of music with ANC on and up to 26 hours with the case, or up to 7 and 30 with ANC off. Those are Samsung's figures. The Galaxy Buds 3 Pro support page also names Active Noise Canceling, plus ambient sound. If you need to hear a gate call, look for that ambient line. If it isn't there, don't count on a button.
What does the water rating cover?
A rating is a lab test. It isn't a promise the pair stays sealed after a year in a pocket, and it isn't a reason to swim in them.
Apple rates the AirPods 4, including the charging case, IP54 under IEC standard 60529. Apple's note says dust, sweat, and water resistance aren't permanent, and that you shouldn't charge them while they're wet.
Samsung rates the Galaxy Buds 4 Pro IP57. The footnote calls that a lab test of submersion in up to 1 meter of fresh water for up to 30 minutes, and the next note says the charging case is not water resistant. Dry the earbuds before they go back in. Samsung's support page rates the Galaxy Buds 3 Pro IP57 as well.
How does the case charge?
The case is the battery you carry. The plug is a separate choice from the hours.
Apple's AirPods 4 case works with a USB-C connector. The spec page says a USB-C charge cable is sold separately. If the listing doesn't show a cable in the box, plan on one you already own. The USB-C cable guide separates a charge-only cable from one that also moves files. For a case, charge-only is enough.
Samsung's Galaxy Buds 4 Pro footnote says a wireless charger and a cable are sold separately. Confirm the box before you assume a cord is inside. The Buds 3 Pro support page lists a 53mAh battery in the earbud and doesn't print listening hours there. Read the hours on the current listing.

What if you wanted headphones instead?
A cup over each ear is a different fit. If a long flight is the reason you're shopping, stay with the headphone guide. If you want to see an in-ear pair in someone's hands first, Pratima Adhikari's live session is the clip. More from Pratima Adhikari.
